Go Vote!

2 Nov

Make time today to go vote. It’s both a right and a privilege to participate in our government. If you don’t believe me, re-read this. It’s amazing that it was already two years ago that we were staying up all night and Patrick was furiously writing a speech to deliver at the US Embassy.

Lucy says "go vote!!"

That lady from Egypt made me cry. It is, indeed, a huge privilege.
My baby is hospitalized with meningitis and I will still find time to vote today. Yay voting!

Can’t ever view election day the same after being in East Germany for their first free election after the wall fell. Most people forget that the German Democratic Republic briefly remade itself into a democracy in the heady 9 months between the collapse of the communist government and unification. Parties and coalitions formed almost overnight.

On a side street on my way to the embassy one morning in January 1990 I noticed people clamoring for something that was being handed out of the back of a large truck. I went closer and saw that it was a special voter’s guide prepared as a service to the East Germans by a major west German magazine. I can’t imagine anyone here elbowing anyone else to get a voter’s pamphlet.

The parliamentary election in March 1990 saw 98% voter turnout. I was privileged to witness vote counting at a small precinct in East Berlin — paper ballots, counted meticulously one by one through the night, by nearly giddy precinct workers. Totally humbling.

    Take Lucy’s advice and vote.
